As a manufacturer of two modular planter systems, Mariner and Audubon, DeepStream can provide cost-effective, lightweight, square and rectangular stand-alone planter sections up to 72", and lightweight multi-section planters of unlimited length, using wood, metal, stone, or just about any material your project specifies.
DeepStream's modular Mariner and Audubon planters use a separate marine aluminum frame, plastic liner, with state-of-the-art drainage, inside an outer box facade to ensure maximum durability, as the planting medium never touches the wood.
DeepStream is also a national high-volume distributor of pots and planters in many shapes constructed of FRP fiberglass, plastic, and GFRC concrete manufactured by Tournesol Siteworks.
DeepStream Designs strives to provide the highest quality planters, manufacturing timeless designs, engineered and constructed so that they will endure for generations, reducing the impact on the earth’s resources, and providing the lowest cost of ownership over time.
Therefore, if you’re looking for a cheap or short-term solution for planters, it would be a waste of your time to specify our product for your project. We are philosophically opposed to building cheap products that will be thrown away in a couple of years, or will end up costing our customers more over time.
Why are DeepStream Designs’ Mariner Wood Planters different from the “knocked together” planters you see falling apart everywhere?
Classic modern design that is engineered for the lowest lifecycle cost of any wooden planter never goes out of style.
DeepStream’s proprietary marine-anodized legs and Anti-Gravity frame system contain and direct the incredible differential forces wood creates when it expands and contracts in the rain and sun, delivering decades of attractive service. Wood that is bolted or screwed together will tear itself apart in time as each piece expands and contacts at different rates, because they come from different trees and parts of trees. DeepStream planters use our proprietary marine-anodized aluminum extrusions and frame which allows wood or recycled plastic lumber planks to expand and contract as necessary.
Plants in our containers will grow better with less soil volume in many difficult sunny locations, because our planter-within-a-planter design prevents the root ball from overheating.
Our design ensures that the sides of the liner holding the root ball are never exposed to the direct sunlight as they can be in single layer planters and pots, as this can steam a root ball that is uninsulated by a thick, heavy layer of soil as it would be naturally in a garden.
The outer planter box also hides drip irrigation lines, and provides for better-controlled drainage and less water usage, which is an important design consideration for balconies, roof decks, and geographical locations with water shortages.
Drip irrigation produces the best growing results while reducing demand on municipal systems and the environment. Healthy plants improve the environment by providing more oxygen, absorbing CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and cooling shaded structures to reduce energy use.
Mariner and Audubon legs are available in various shapes that allow us to quickly build modular planters of infinite dimensions in any rectilinear configuration. they can also be single-sided to reduce costs. While standard leg heights are 21”, 31”, and 42”, they are available up to 144”. Casters can be added for portability, and there are two trellis options: stainless steel rod or mesh.
DeepStream products are manufactured by American craftsmen using yacht-building techniques and materials, and allow for damaged pieces to be replaced at the manufacturer’s direct cost via our unique “Core Replacement Program.” Proprietary dielectric paste prevents the stainless steel fasteners from seizing in the aluminum legs for decades of access. Proprietary copper treatment of any closed holes in the wood enhances the tropical hardwood’s natural qualities to prevent wood rot for decades.
We avoid the damaging contact with the ground and planting material that you see in other planters by using molded recycled plastic liners that will never leak, and that prevent the soil from coming into contact with the wood. Our HDPE plastic feet also prevent contact between the legs and the ground or standing water. Sacrificial zincs can be added to any product to further reduce deterioration in tough saltwater marine environments.
Stainless steel fasteners, marine-anodized 6063-T5 aluminum, 3/4” solid tropical hardwood planking, and high-density plastics that not only last for decades, but also allow for a more elegant and modern design, and ultimately recycling.
While enjoying your outdoor wood planters keep in mind that drainage is critical to the health of your plants grown in containers, and it is very difficult to remedy after the fact. Generally more "tended" plants die from drowning than from lack of water. "Old School" drain holes on the bottom and "gravel" drainage medium simply do not work and will quickly clog.
DeepStream pioneered modern drainage practices with side-wall drains and 3-layer drain packs. DeepStream places from one to three 3/4" threaded drainage ports on its 12 stock proprietary plastic planter liners, to which various plugs, hose barbs and valves may be attached. Liners are non-structural and are meant to be placed inside planter boxes.
Depending on your plants, planting mixture, and local weather, you may need to add more drains. Additional drain holes can be added as required by drilling additional holes in the side walls. DeepStream installed drains are centered about 2" above the bottom to allow the clay "fines" in planting mediums that are responsible for clogging to settle to the bottom.
Standard ABS liners and custom-welded liners come without drain holes, but they may be drilled as required. Reservoir liners come with one drain port, and more cannot be added.
If your planters will not be dug up and replanted every year then we strongly recommend adding Drain Filter Packs for each drain. A three-part filter combines the waffled plastic backing of TREMdrain, three layers of filter fabric, and Biobarrier buttons to inhibit root growth. They may not stop aggressive root systems like Bamboo and Clusia.
Filter packs, when used in conjunction with clean 1-2 mm inorganic drainage material to slow the flow of the water to the drain, could prevent clogged drains for a decade or more.
DeepStream Designs will, in case of damage or an unacceptable degradation in finish, replace any metal component, plastic caps, plastic feet, lid retaining straps, bungee cord, and most other components of our products at manufacturer’s cost, plus shipping, for any planter box we make. All components of our products are recyclable, so under this program, major components, such as aluminum legs and stainless steel lids must be returned to DeepStream for recycling. The aluminum extrusions, stainless steel lids, and fasteners used in planters that DeepStream manufactures are guaranteed for the life of the structure against defects in manufacturing, materials and workmanship. Our multi-section planter frames are guaranteed for life against structural defects.
The panels made from rigid materials or fabrics are the customer’s selection and retain the manufacturer’s warranty for those materials, which will vary by manufacturer. We will be happy to provide warranty information for products and components that we do not manufacture.
Aluminum extrusions and stainless steel fasteners have been used in the yachting industry for decades. The etched marine anodized finish of the aluminum extrusions is a durable finish, created especially for coastal environments (Alumilite 215/A41 with surface preparation C22). The 3/4" tropical hardwoods we select have been used in exterior applications such as docks, decks and boat construction for centuries. These woods have decades of life expectancy, although they can be affected by mold, mildew, dry rot and drying.
The primary failure for wooden planters is the joining of wood components to each other. Wood has been used for centuries to split stone because of its tendency to expand when wet. DeepStream has designed its products with heavy aluminum extrusions to join these components in such a way that allows the wood to expand and contract naturally to withstand the test of time. We assemble these products using a proprietary bedding compound in the wood for screw holes to prevent rot, and proprietary dielectric paste for stainless steel fasteners to aluminum extrusions to avoid galvanic action that can cause them to seize over time.
Environmental conditions and maintenance, or lack thereof, will affect the life expectancy of the finish of our products, and as such, no warranty is given on the finish, but we do offer the Core Replacement Program to assist in keeping our planters, recyclers and structures looking fresh.
